Academic Advising offers instruction in skills and strategies to support the intellectual development of all Dickinson Students on campus. These services include afternoon and evening workshops and individualized one-on-one sessions with a learning specialist to assist students in developing time management and organizational skills, studying skills, test-taking strategies, reading, writing, and note-taking skills.
Workshops generally run one hour in length. Notices of workshops are posted in The Compass, on posters throughout campus, on the bulletin board in Academic Advising, and the Advising homepage. Also, student groups (academic, athletic, and community organizations) on campus may arrange for an individualized workshop tailored to their particular needs. These workshops may be scheduled during the day or evening hours. For more personalized instruction, students on campus are also invited to schedule individualized one-on-one sessions with a learning specialist. Appointments for workshops and individualized instruction can be scheduled by calling (717) 245-1080 or contacting Jorja Waybrant at waybranj@dickinson.edu.

The following information outlines the types of workshops or individualized one-on-one instruction offered though Academic Advising:
Time Management and Organizational Strategies
Successful students in college manage their time and goals well. In the Time Management and Organizational Strategies Workshop, students learn to set short-term and long-term academic goals, organize their weekly and semester schedule, and evaluate progress by tracking their grades in each class. Four tools (forms) have been developed and tailored to each Dickinson semester to assist students who want to become better organized in managing their time and course load in order to achieve academic success.
Studying Skills
To prepare adequately for tests you must do more than expose yourself to the material. Studying is a two-way process: taking information in and preparing how to take information out. In the Studying Skills Workshop strategies are taught in exposure, review, and practice of course material. Individuals will also explore their own learning style and develop strategies to promote active studying techniques.
Test-taking Strategies
The Test-taking Strategies Workshop covers various tips to best prepare for test-taking along with general guidelines for working through questions from specific types of testing, such as: multiple choice, matching, sentence completion or fill-in-the-blank, and essay.
Note-taking Skills
There are many different strategies to taking notes. Notes can also be rewritten to use as a study guide. The Note-taking Skills Workshop offers suggestions for how to get the most from your notes.
