Women’s Tennis Falls in CC Semifinals
Leigh Oczkowski ’12 and Brittany Zoll ’12, the number two doubles team, earned the lone point for the Red Devils as they battled their way to an 8-3 victory.
That would be the lone bright spot for the Devils, as the Garnet captured the other two doubles matches while taking the first, third, and fifth flight singles matches as well.
Alysia Rodgers ’13 fell 6-0, 6-1 in the top flight, as Oczkowski was unable to muster the same strong play she demonstrated in her doubles match up, falling in the fifth flight 6-2,6-1.
Despite falling in the third flight, Zoll had a very strong performance in a losing effort. She battled in the first set to a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (7-4), before dropping the second set by another narrow margin, 6-4.
Even though the season came to a close in a difficult match, the overall season was extremely successful. With 15 wins and only two loses in the Centennial Conference, they earned their #19 regional ranking and their place at the CC semifinals, where they drew a tough match up against Swarthmore, who entered with a #7 regional ranking.
Highlights on the season include a perfect 4-0 trip to Hilton Head in March, thrilling 5-4 victories over Haverford and rival Gettysburg, and dominating shut out wins against McDaniel and Franklin & Marshall.
They will graduate three seniors, Swarthmore match standouts Zoll and Oczkowski and key contributor on the season Nora Hajnoczky ’12. They end with a record of 15-4 and 8-2 in the Centennial Conference.
