Violinist, Pianist to Perform Brahms at College

Violinist Joanna Kurkowicz and pianist Gloria Chien will present a program featuring Brahms’ three violin sonatas on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m., at Dickinson College’s Rubendall Recital Hall in the Weiss Center for the Arts, West High Street, between West and South College streets. The event is free and open to the public.

A winner of numerous music competitions and praised in the magazine Gramophone for her “disciplined virtuosity,” the Polish-born violinist Kurkowicz enjoys an active and versatile career as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. She has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York and Jordan Hall in Boston, and has appeared as a soloist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Metamorphosen Chamber Orchestra, New England String Ensemble, Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, San Luis Obispo Symphony, Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra and Polish National Radio Orchestra in Katowice, as well as with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berkshire Symphony in which she currently serves as concertmistress. She is artist-in-residence at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and is on the faculty at Tufts University. Born in Taipei, Chien began playing piano at age 5. She left Taiwan for the United States when she was 14 and began studying under Wha-Kyung Byun. She was accepted to the New England Conservatory of Music where she earned her undergraduate degree and her master’s degree under the instruction of virtuoso Russell Sherman. She has appeared as a featured soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New England Conservatory Honors Orchestra. Among her awards are the Harvard Musical Association Achievement Award and winner of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition. Chein is an assistant professor at Lee University.
