Dear Colleagues,
As Conference Chair for 2010, I send you best wishes for a great school year. In order to help our 21st century learners function with linguistic and cultural ease in a globally interconnected society, we need to instill the essential skills of our language curriculum in each one. In 2010, NECTFL will explore the best practices, research, program designs, and people who successfully make this happen.
We are thrilled also to welcome our colleagues from the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) who are holding their annual spring colloquium as a joint event with the 2010 Northeast Conference. Attendees pay one fee to participate, so it's like getting two professional development opportunities for the price of one!
In response to attendee recommendations and requests for networking opportunities, our opening session will be designed to facilitate dialogue with leaders in our field, with gatekeepers and stakeholders from outside the field, and with each other. The conference will thus begin with multiple, exciting options for our diverse attendee population. This unique format is designed to maximize your time at the conference and to tap into the expertise of you, our attendees. Once you leave the opening activities, you will find the same wealth of choices in the exhibit areas, workshops and sessions! And throughout the day Friday and Saturday, you can return to the networking area to peruse materials, discuss a presentation you've just seen, sip a cup of coffee, or meet with an expert.
On behalf of the NECTFL Board of Directors, I invite each and every one of you to attend and share your ideas on what you think makes language learning vital to our students. I look forward to seeing you in New York City for an irresistible experience in professional development, advocacy, and networking.
Sincerely,
Jaya Vijayasekar
