Dickinson College's
chapter of Amnesty International believes that we, as a small group of
individuals, can make a difference in the global fight for human rights.
In the past, we have done:
-
Monthly letter writing campaigns (write-a-thons), where people read
urgent actions sent from the National office of Amnesty International and
write letters on the behalf of prisoners-of-conscience, tortured and threatened
individuals
-
Days of education including "Lamp-Post Action" where students dress up
as an individual prisoner-of-conscience and tie themselves to lamp-posts
in the Academic Quad. They then tell passers-by about their story, and
get signatures which are then sent to governments on that person's behalf.
-
Days of awareness including "Cage the Faculty" where students put faculty/staff
of the College in a large cage in the main building on campus, the HUB,
and that person can not be released until they have a certain number of
letters written on their behalf (the caged faculty member represents a
prisoner-of conscience)
-
Outdoor benefit concerts such as "Jamnesty", where socially-conscious bands
are invited to the College for a small fee, and along with great music,
students are asked to write a letter on the behalf of a prisoner-of-conscience.
Money for the chapter's stamps and writing supplies are also raised at
this time.
