Our Mission: Fighting Cancer

The Crush Auction

On November 15th, Phi Kappa Sigma, along with Kappa Alpha Theta, sponsored our annual Crush Auction for Leukemia. This event has been popular for some time among the Dickinson community, and it has been a major philanthropy event for the chapter for the past five years.

The Crush Auction is basically just a “Win a date with ____” bidding contest. People sign up to be auctioned off in front of the student body during dinner in the cafeteria. On the day of the auction, they come up onto a stage set up in the cafeteria and people in the crowd begin bidding money for a date with them, with the highest bidder of course winning a date with the person auctioned off.

This year, the event was hosted by Ryan Sherman ’10 of Phi Kappa Sigma as well as a representative of Kappa Alpha Theta. The goal of the event is usually to have a good time and get a good number of students involved, and the amount of money raised is just a secondary issue, albeit a secondary issue that goes to a tremendous cause. However, this year, over 60 students/student groups were auctioned off, and over $1,200 was raised to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma research, both of which are near record numbers.

All of the brothers took an active role in this event, as some were auctioned off themselves, some recruited people to sign up to be auctioned off, and others walked around the cafeteria asking for donations for the Leukemia Society. All in all, it was a great day for the brotherhood, and Phi Kap has already secured the right to sponsor the auction again in 2008.
