YouTube of the Month :: Jackie & Debra Phoebe Dembs
Pop culture doesn't always translate gracefully to rural America. The YouTube video “Jackie & Debra” demonstrates just this. Debra (played by a man) is the narrator, and the only character we see in the video. Debra wears a pink outfit, a Chihuahua wristlet, has bleach-blonde hair, and a grotesque nose job held up by tape. She relays her story about her ex-best friend, Jackie Alexis Rightenbock as she parades around her small town. The cause of the fight is Debra's racy high school ski trip. After having “HALF a sip of wine cooler,” Debra is put in a compromising position with the two girls' mutual crush, Robbie Vlector. Jealousy ensues and Jackie begins to ignore Debra. Reminiscent of a scenario from Laguna Beach or The Hills, the video chronicles their dramatic break-up and make-up.
The sketch is written by and starring John Roberts, and directed by Clay Weiner. In 2007, “Jackie & Debra” won the Comedy Smalls Competition, a competition produced by The Smalls and Paramount Comedy to support underexposed comedians.
