A Cup of the Good Life
   Alice Drozdiak

When I arrived at Dickinson’s campus in the fall of 2004, I looked forward to nights of chatting with my peers over a delicious, steaming cup of coffee; this dream was partially realized, but one important element has been missing. I have found places with a pleasant atmosphere, or good food, or friendly service, but I have remained unsatisfied. Nowhere in Carlisle have I been able to find a truly good cup of coffee. That is, until now.

The Good Life Café has no trouble living up to its name. Located on 26 North Hanover Street, the Café strives to provide a comfortable environment through sustainable practice. With everything from free range chickens, locally produced dairy products, right down to biodegradable packaging for its take-out, you’ll be able to enjoy your delicious meal with a clear conscience. Not only that, but the Good Life Café provides a venue for local artists, with bands performing regularly.

In addition to various staples like cheeseburgers and roast chicken sandwiches, the Café also offers less common fair like its Traditional Tarragon Chicken Salad, or Turkey Paella. You could also stop in just for some baba ganoush or some organic (and delicious) chocolate chip cookies. Either way, you’ll be glad you stopped in to enjoy the warm atmosphere.

Part of the success of the Good Life Café must be credited to the personnel. I have always been greeted with enthusiasm and warmth (and they didn’t even know I’d be writing this review!) They are eager to talk to you about their philosophy about their business, the weather, or choices on the menu. Or they’ll simply serve you your food with a smile, if that’s what you prefer.

The Good Life Café has not been around long; it opened its doors in December. But, there is no reason it shouldn’t succeed: it fills a niche that has been empty for too long in our community. Go see for yourself, and enjoy one of the few places in Carlisle where you can get organic, local food, wonderful service, and a real sense of community. Not to mention a good cup of coffee.

The Good Life Café is open from 11:00 am to 8:00pm Monday through Thursday and 11:00 am to 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. Learn more at www.thegoodlifecafe.com.
