WDCV began broadcasting in 1962 on 640 AM. Our original studio was in a room in what is now the Quarry and the station's signal was carried over telephone lines to transmitters in every residence hall. In the fall of1973, WDCV debuted at 88.3 MHZ on the FM dial. The station's programming for its initial FM season included student-produced public affairs shows and live broadcasts of football and basketball games, all continue to be a part of WDCV's programming 30 years later. Recent graduates and newcomers to the College community might not know about our recent name change. Until the Spring of 2004, WDCV was known on campus as The Frequency, or The Freq for short. As much as we enjoyed this moniker, we felt that it didn't fully encapsulate our ideals as an organization. In 2003, the station's executive board discussed the possibility of changing the station's name to something that better represents our goals and vision. It was discovered that when the station began to operate, it was not known as "The Freq;" rather, it was called "The Voice of Dickinson College." Our call letters, WDCV, actually stand for Dickinson College Voice (FM call letters east of the Mississippi River begin with W; call letters west of the river begin with K). Click here to read a story on our name change in the Dickinsonian, Dickinson College's student newspaper.
